A linen bread bag offers several advantages that paper and plastic bags do not. If you want to enjoy freshly made bread for a longer period, you can either buy or make your own.
They’re exactly what they sound like bread sacks. They’re bread storage bags made of fabric. Linen bread bags are good for the environment, keep bread, and look lovely in the kitchen.
What Makes Bread Bags So Special?
Everyone enjoys a fresh loaf of bread right from the oven. Freshly made bread with a warm crumb and the crispy top is great at any time of day, but most people don’t get to enjoy it very frequently.
When freshly baked bread is left out on the counter, it only lasts 3-4 days before becoming stale and moldy. If you wanted excellent bread every day, you’d have to prepare or buy at least two fresh loaves of bread every week. This is absolutely out of the question unless you’re a baker or have the time and money to spare.
Linen bread sacks are very helpful in this situation.
Linen has antibacterial properties. Linen cloth is more stain-resistant than other textiles. Bacteria, mildew, and (most critically) mold are all protected by it. Its non-allergenic, antibacterial, and antimicrobial characteristics make it ideal for use in bread bags and wound dressings.
Linen is a breathable fabric. This fabric is lightweight and does not obstruct airflow. The liquid in the bread will be trapped if there is no air, causing the bread to get soggy. This is why it’s not a good idea to keep fresh bread in plastic bags.
Linen absorbs a lot of liquid. Similarly, linen absorbs any moisture that the bread releases and keeps it away from the loaf. This keeps the bread from becoming soggy, as well as preventing mold growth.
Insects don’t like linen. Linen fabric is naturally repellent to moths and mosquitos. As a result, you won’t have to worry about insects getting inside your bread.
Linen is a durable and long-lasting fabric. A linen bag, unlike a paper bag, may last for years. Linen is three times tougher than wool and cotton and can endure tension, rips, and tears better than other fabrics.
Linen is a biodegradable material. Linen bread bags are the most environmentally friendly alternative. You won’t have to worry about your single-use paper or plastic bag trash filling a landfill since you can reuse them again and again.
Bags made of linen are appealing. This point is probably unimportant, but it is worth mentioning. Being able to personalize your bread bag is a major bonus if you’re someone who enjoys being creative and has a specific design in mind for your kitchen decor. Because linen is so easy to work with, you might want to try your hand at sewing, embroidering, and embellishing your linen bag.
How to Sew a Linen Bread Bag
Now that you’ve learned about the many advantages of utilizing linen bread bags let’s look at how to make your own. One of the most simple sewing projects is a bread bag. Making this easy bread bag shouldn’t be too difficult for you, even if you’ve never sewed before.
The most important material you need to make your linen bread bag is linen. For this craft, you may use linen towels, napkins, or clothes. Linen napkins are the easiest to work with because you won’t have to cut or resize them.
Home Goods 18″ x 18″ Linen Napkins
This 12 piece set of simple linen napkins is ideal for making bread bags. For a little over $20, you can purchase enough fabric to make 6 bread bags. You’ll also have plenty of fabric to pick from if you make a mistake and want to start over. You may make various sewing projects with the remaining napkins or simply use them as ordinary napkins.
Fingercraft 18″ x 18″ Linen Napkins
Try these if you want something a little more vibrant. They’re the same price as plain napkins, but they come in a variety of colors. Bread bags that are mixed and matched are fun to add a dash of color to your kitchen.
You’ll Require…
- 2 linen napkins or linen fabric pieces
- 2 22″ ribbon or thread pieces
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Step 1: Cut your fabric. As long as the linen fabric is large enough, you may use anything you have on hand. I chose to cut my cloth pieces 11 inches wide by 16 inches long after measuring the loaf of bread in my bread box.
Step 2: Sew the bottom seam. Place the two fabric pieces on top of each other and stitch around 12”-1” from the bottom, width-wise. Sew up the sides until you’ve reached about 2” from the top.
Step 3: Sew the ribbon holes. Take one piece of ribbon and drape it width-wise over the top of the bag to create a drawstring closure. Allow a few millimeters between the fabric’s edge and the ribbon’s edge. Fold the cloth over the ribbon and pin it in place.
Make sure you don’t pin the ribbon to the cloth when you pin it. You should have no trouble pulling the ribbon through the cloth. Sew the fabric down next.
Step 4: Do it all over again. Follow the directions in step 3 to make a second fabric loop on the other side of the cloth. Make sure not to stitch the ribbon down again.
Step 5: Decorate your bag. I chose to make two bows out of my ribbons. This keeps them from falling out of the cloth and gives the bag a finished appearance. If you’re feeling very crafty, you might embroider the cloth or embellish it with lace or another ribbon.
Why not make some for friends and family now that you know how to make your bread bag? The bags may be customized, making them ideal housewarming gifts and gifts for any “pedophiles” in your life.
